This podcast is based on a systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the impact of ChatGPT on student learning, addressing three research questions.
First, it describes the characteristics of existing experimental studies using ChatGPT interventions, focusing on educational stage, subject area, setting, duration, and application mode. Second, it meta-analyzes the effects of these interventions on various learning dimensions—academic performance, affective-motivational states, higher-order thinking, self-efficacy, and mental effort—identifying significant positive effects on most, but not all, dimensions. Third, it assesses the methodological rigor of these studies, particularly concerning sample size estimation and baseline difference control, revealing a substantial need for improved methodology in future research. The overall purpose is to provide evidence-based insights for researchers, instructors, and policymakers regarding the responsible integration of ChatGPT in education.
